THE Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) is a world leader in research and development of components and systems for mobile and optical communication networks as well as video signal coding and data processing. In the field of photonic components, the focus is on the development of optoelectronic components and their housing. Fraunhofer HHI has successfully developed a wide range of photonic components for communication and sensor technology, such as high-speed lasers and photodetectors.
In many cases developments could be transferred to production in close cooperation with industrial partners by making use of the in-house InP pilot line at Fraunhofer HHI. In addition, the department of photonic networks deals with optical data transmission and the system evaluation of the components. In recent years, quantum technologies have been established as another focus of research work. For example, Fraunhofer HHI contributes its technologies and expertise to the EU QT flagship projects CiViQ and UNIQORN as well as the QuNET and Q.Link.X initiatives funded by the BMBF.
